If you are forced to relinquish an animal, understand the low adoption rates at county shelters may mean not so good news for the animal you are relinquishing. If you adopted the animal from a rescue group, the rescue group WILL take the animal back from you in almost 100% of the cases. Actually, the vast majority have it written into the contract that an animal must be returned to them and not simply handed to another person or turned into the shelter. If you do not know or remember the group who you received the animal from, visiting a veterinarian and asking them to scan the animal for it's micro-chip suaully works in identifying the rescue group.
If you must turn an animal into a shelter, please use a city managed shelter.
