What To Do If Your Pet is Lost
|
- Check with the shelter that is responsible for servicing your city directly as well as shelters in neighboring cities as pets can cross city borders easily. Remember to check daily for multiple days as city and county shelters can take up to 3-4 days to accurately log animals into their facilities. The petfiniti.com shelter listing page is available here.
- Check with your county shelter as well. Some residents may not be aware of the most local shelter, and so they may bring what they believe to be a stray animal to a county facility. Time is of the essence when dealing with all shelters, so be sure to look often and early. The petfiniti.com shelter listing page is available here.
- Check websites that list lost & found pets such as shelter sites and the websites we have listed below.
- Ask neighbors directly by knocking on doors. Bring a picture and printed flyers with you and ask if it is ok if you a leave a flyer. You may not speak with everyone who lives in the home, and the neighbor may see your pet after you speak.
- Post fliers with a picture and an accurate description along with information on how to contact you. Remember, to post fliers where appropriate so they don't get taken down, and post them in neighboring neighborhoods. Check on the fliers every few days to be sure they are still there.
- Ask local veterinarians to post fliers or keep a flier as found pets may be brought into the vet eventually for treatment.
- Stay positive and don't give up hope when searching for your loved one. There have been many stories of pets being found much after owners thought they were gone forever.
- Use multiple resources when searching as your pet may be found and brought anywhere.

Preventative Measures You Can Take
|
- Micro Chipping is a common practice that your pet can perform for you. If an animal is found, veterinarians and shelters will scan that animal to see if an ID chip is available. If it is, then the owner is contacted and alerted to their pet's whereabouts. A list of available services is located here. You may also want to search the petfiniti.com pet product and service directory under Microchip & ID services.
- Keep the information current with pet tags, micro-chipping services and any other pet locator services that you have registered with. While it may be something that you think you can do when you arrive at a new home, being proactive can mean the difference. When you move with your pets, they can become disoriented and that may be the time that they get lost.
- Get tags and safety collars that allow you to ensure your animal is properly identified to everyone, including the general public. If a neighbor finds your pet with a tag, they may make an assumption that it is a stray and decide to take it to the county shelter or worse, keep it as their own lessening the chance you will find your loved one. This stands true for indoor only cats as well as dogs.
- Take pictures frequently of your pet. While this one isn't much of a stretch for most of us, we do need to be sure we always have a representative picture of each and every one of our pets. Keep the picture in digital form (on your computer) to be sure it can be used on fliers in case you need to create them for a lost pet. Also, something to also consider is the size of the picture, be sure it is large enough to put on a flier without distortion so the pet is recognizable when adjusted to the size of the printed flier.
